The first re-programmable quantum computer has been created. Kind of weird. This was one of my near future predictions in my novel, Future’s Dark Past.
Quantum Computers to take over by 2025
I think the key word here is “re-programmable.” Until recently, quantum computers could only be programmed to do one thing. That’s very limiting, so this is a tremendous advance for quantum computing. And I realize this one is only running on five quantum bits (each qubit is a little, tiny ion), but it’s a start. Getting kind of “geeky,” I know, but there is so much more to this I thought I’d just dazzle you with one quantum fact.
So what’s the big deal? Quantum computers are inherently faster and smarter than today’s electric CPU driven computers, thus much more powerful. For example, our current public key cryptography is believed to be impossible to break by today’s standards. However, a quantum computer could efficiently and quickly solve this problem. Security, as we know it, would no longer be relevant.
In my novel, Future’s Dark Past, Chen-Yi Wei, the evil AI scientist, creates the first large-scale quantum mainframe and develops her own artificially intelligent computer in the process. What will she do with such power? Our protagonist, Hunter Coburn, has to figure that out and stop her before she can destroy the world. He uses his AI (Comperi, the wolf avatar) to help decide if he can save the future. Unfortunately, after joining a small band of clandestine time agents, Hunter is in a dogfight of his own. Our government has labeled him one of our most wanted fugitives and is dead set on stopping him at all costs.
The Future’s Dark Past is out! Future Unfolds releases late July. You can find both on our website.
